Although I was apprehensive at first that it would sound more like a student instrument, the tone was very warm and bright as I played it straight out of the case. Some instruments that sell for a price like this sound very harsh and thin, but I would definitely compare this to a higher-end Chinese-made instrument. I used different strings but other than that minor adjustment, the straight acoustic sound was great and my roommate and I knew immediately that this was not a cheapo violin. "It's so pretty!" my roomie exclaimed. "How sweet it sounds!" I then proceeded to install the L.R. Baggs pickup system on the instrument as well as volume and this is probably one of the best instruments I'd ever played onstage. Although Baggs is a great pickup, the violin used makes the BIGGEST difference. As an acoustic-electric instrument, the violin sounded very clean, even, and genuine, yet not too woody, and far better than electric instruments like Yamaha. Another thing I like about the Starburst Red ColorViolin is that I feel that it's personalized to match me as a performer as well. It makes no difference that you are a great musician if you are using an instrument that looks like just another acoustic violin. You have to have a signature look. Starburst Red with the glittery pearl powder was right up my alley and is probably my best looking violin! So far, I've used this violin as an acoustic instrument at private functions, playing background music, or amplified with the onslaught of a Latin-jazz and salsa band, and the reaction from both the band and the crowd has been amazing! This violin will surely make its mark on the Live Music Scene here in Austin, and I'm pleased to have this ColorViolin in my collection - I'm ordering Berry Purple and Mango Yellow as well. Thanks a lot! Omar Lopez electric violinist in Austin, Texas www.geocities.com/OmarLopezMusic
